#9. Amanda

#9. 'People ask me that all the time.' That is, how a native Hawaiian moved from a place surrounded by oceans to Madison - far from any oceans - to study Oceanography? However, that's exactly what Amanda did.

She is in her first year of the oceanography graduate program. When I meet up with her on Memorial Union's Terrace she was reviewing some of the basics of the science. Someday she wants to work on using the ocean as a form of alternative energy, and told me that Hawaii just started doing it.

#8 Ben

#8. 'Kind of a late bloomer' Ben replied when I asked him how long he's been skateboarding. The 21 year old UW Student started 4 years ago.

When I first started talking to him Ben assumed I wanted some action shots of him and he directed me where to stand in order to get the best view. He told me he skated "Goofy" which means his right foot is forward.

#7. Travis

#7. "Like a Leprechaun?" Travis asked me that when I asked him if he could sit on that ledge. I stopped him because of his awesome hat, and of course it's St. Patrick's Day.

Travis was on his work break, taking a stroll because it was so nice today. He's a bartender at Zanders and had a couple hours to spare between shifts.

I also asked him about his shirt, if it said anything on the back. He said no, and that his mom gave it to him. Kind of funny.

As you can tell I'm back at this project. I haven't posted a stranger for a while, but now I'm recommitted to this project.

#6. Korrin

#6. I meet Korrin in Indianapolis, but she's really from Seattle moving to Southern California. I was doing a freelance job for a motocross website - www.mxpreview.com when I met Korrin. She works for Alpinestars one of the biggest motocross boots companies.

Korrin was awesome. She seemed to enjoy the portrait shoot. She even told me about this Dolphin pose she created one night with some frineds, but she wouldn't recreate it for me. I defiantly would of posted that one if she did.

One thing I've noticed is most everybody I've photographed so far has seemed to enjoy it. I know I've got a long way to go but people have been really cool so far.

I took some awesome wide shots of Korrin showing more of the Alpinestars booth in the background, but in the end I chose this picture just because she has a beautiful smile.

I originally wanted to take more photographs of strangers in Indy but I spent so much time working that I just didn't get around to it. Oh well.

#5. Annette

#5. I discovered this lighthouse a few miles from where I used to live when I was in college. I never knew it was there. I was taking photographs of it when I thought I really wanted to get a stranger with it. That's when Annette came running by.

She was in the middle of a 4 mile jog when I stopped her. She told me she tries to run at least once a week. Annette was very patient with me because it took some time to get the lighting right on her face.

#4. Julie

#4. I meet Julie at the University Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Union. She was reading a book for her lit class. I went up to her because I always found it hard to study in the Union because of all the activity going on there.

When I asked Julie to model for me she did not decline. I asked her questions about herself, but she wasn't very talkative. I did find out that she was a senior graphic design major.

For this picture I asked her to keep reading. I stood on top of a chair to get this angle, probably attracting more attention to us then she may of wanted. Oh well, it got a pretty good shot.

#3. Bob, Dave, and Colin

#3. I was hanging out with some friends at the University Wisconsin's Memorial Union when I encountered these three guys. I had told my friends about this 100 stranger project (in fact some of them saw me photographing Dawn the night before). They liked the idea and encouraged me to go up to these guys. I was hesitant at first only because I didn't think I was ready for a group of strangers. However, after the portrait session I was glad I met them as they were very interesting guys.

Bob, Dave, and Colin are 3 playwrights. They were hanging out together after seeing some of Dave's work being read that night. The guys seemed to be getting into me taking portraits of them. They were even making jokes about where these pictures were going to end up online. Bob is the chair of Playwrights Ink - a Madison area writers group. Throughout my time with them Colin would repeatedly mention how Bob was famous to the city theater, even calling him a superstar at one time. Bob, all the while, modestly denied these claims.

Colin also wanted me to let everyone know that he was in a local movie called "Mad City Chickens." I think he played Geezer #3. Anyways, if your interested the DVD release is March 10. You can find out more about the film here.

#2. Ben

#2. Blackhawk Church has this huge atrium. It's long and skinny with a high ceiling and interesting lights. I wanted to take portraits of someone and capture this depth of the room with a wide shot. So, I waited until the atrium was almost empty hoping there would still be someone left willing to be photographed.

That's when I found Ben. He is a Blackhawk Janitor by weekend, and a Poli Sci major at the University Wisconsin by weekday. Other then his senior portraits in high school he's never done any sort of portrait shoot before.

I took a few wide shots of Ben with the depth of the atrium and some turned out well. However, I really liked this prayer pose I had him in. So, next time I go back to church I'll have to work on that depth pose with someone new.

100 STRANGERS

100 STRANGERS... the idea is not original, but rather it came from a Photographer named Teppo. Check out his 100 Strangers. Also, check out the 100 Strangers group on Flicker.

The ASSIGNMENT... to take 100 different portraits of different strangers in my everyday life. Teppo started this project because he found it hard to walk up to people he didn't know and ask to take their portrait. For me, that's not a problem. I go up to strangers and film them with a video camera everyday of work.

My personal goal is to learn more about portrait photography. I think I'm great at candid moments. When it comes to directing people - telling them what to do and how to pose - I seem to struggle. After this first photo, I know I have a lot of learning to do.

#1... The first person in this series taught me the simplest lessons. Make sure to write down their name right away. I can't remember whether this ladies name is Dawn, Emily, or something completely different. So, I'm choosing to call her Dawn.

I met Dawn at Blackhawk Church after an evening service. She works as an Event Coordinator for InterVarsity, a student ministry.

I wish I spent a little more time on this shoot. I think I ended it early because I was actually nervous, and couldn't think of any more ideas as to how to pose her. I think for future, I need to say calmer.

TACO BELL TOUR

The Madison area has nine Taco Bells. Seven in Madison, one in Sun Prairie, and one in Monona.

Because of Jason Bartlett's stolen base in game one of the MLB World Series Taco Bell gave out free tacos to America.

This is the story of two friends, Jon and Paul, and their quest to conquer all 9 Madison area Taco Bells savoring 9 free tacos.

3:46 pm - 534 State St, Madison - Our epic journey begins.

According to the official Steal a Base, Steal a Taco Rules, the free taco is supposed to be a Crunchy Seasoned Beef Taco. I was given a Volcano Taco by mistake. Just a little heat to kick start this adventure.

4:12 pm - 3002 E. Washington Ave, Madison - Taco Bell number 2

We hit up the drive-thru trying to save precious minutes. Taco Bell was only giving out tacos until 6:00 pm. We had to hurry if we were to accomplish this goal.

4:32 pm - 228 E Towne Mall, Madison - Showing off our third tacos.

4:48 pm - 2005 Mccoy Rd, Sun Prairie - Crunchy tacos are normally 89 cents. But not today.

We debated whether or not the Sun Prairie location was close enough to Madison to count as an area Taco Bell, but we decided we couldn't pass it up.

5:08 pm - Hwy 12 and 18 mile marker 265 - Our anticipation was building as we neared the Monona location.

5:14 pm - 100 E Broadway, Monona - The 5th Taco Bell was defiantly the fanciest looking one in the area.

Jon and I both like soft shell tacos better. This was the first Taco Bell we were given the option of choosing Crunchy or Soft. Jon is really savoring this one.

I, on the other hand, ate so fast I just couldn't keep it all in my mouth at one time.

5:29 pm - 1920 S Park St, Madison - Traffic on the beltline made us nervous we weren't going to make all 9 locations before 6:00 pm.

With 30 minutes left we decided the drive-thru might be faster then going inside. We were wrong. The Acura in front of us had a huge order slowing things down.

5:47 pm - 104 W Towne Mall, Madison - We litteraly ran into the mall grab our tacos. No time for walking. Thirteen minutes left and two Taco Bells to go after this one.

5:58 pm - 421 E Commerce Dr, Madison - Taco Bell number eight with two minutes left we waited for what would be our last free tacos.

Our last free tacos, both soft shell in the bag.

6:22 pm - 5001 Universty ave #200, Madison - The last Taco Bell and dispite our begging the casheir we were denied free tacos. Yet, to complete this quest we paid for our final tacos. They were delicious to the very end.

Plan B

The Food and Drug Administration's decision to approve the Plan B pill for over-the-counter sale has been a continuing story for The Leader. Last year, I wrote my first article for the newspaper on the possibility of the drug being sold over-the-counter. About a month ago Plan B was allowed for sale with out a prescription. That was the reason for a new Leader article, and a picture of the box - taken by me - to go along with it.

Kenilworth Square Apartments

The new Kenilworth apartments - which are meant for upperclassmen, graduate students, and visiting faculty - provided vivid color situations and impressive lighting conditions.

I photographed the building for The Leader. The first picture ran with the story, the rest are a few more good shots.

Last night my friends Martha, Jon, Jon's friend Megan and myself went to Jazz in the Park in downtown Milwaukee. Every Thursday night in summer Cathedral Square Park holds free Jazz concerts. Last nights concert featured the Fell Boyzs.

Just as Jon said, "jazz starts off slow and builds;" the Fell Boyzs did that.

The first set was more of music one would 'chill out' too. However, a few homeless looking guys thought it was great music to dance too, and did they ever dance.

The second set, which I enjoyed more, resembled a rock jazz concert. The music was more upbeat and energetic. Shortly after the second set, more people either started liking the music more or had enough to drink and joined the few guys whom were already dancing.

These photos were taken during that second set. Because of the lively music being played, I did some simple color adjustments to represent the music within the pictures.

MULTICULTURAL STUDENT CENTER

The following photos were published in The Leader along side the article: Multicultural centers prep for move to Bolton Hall, by Martha Boehm.

The Multicultural Student Center (MSC) offices, along with other University Wisconsin-Milwaukee multicultural centers, will be moving to a new, more open location in Bolton Hall.

These photos are of the Multicultural Student Lounge, which is run by the MSC.

MINORITY STUDENTS ON CAMPUS

One of my photos which I took as part of the Pavilion photo series, actually got used in the next edition. THE PAVILION ADDITION

My second photo project for the Jan 25 edition of The Leader was a photo essay on the new addition to the Klotsche center, called the Pavilion.

The Klotsche Center is UWM's athletic facility and is free for students to use. The new addition has a brand new gym, weight rooms, cardo rooms, and many facilities for UMW's sports teams. The facility also includes 618 new parking spaces, which helps alleviate part of the parking problem on campus.

This photo essay was my first of the year. When I was assigned the project, I was told to photograph people using the center. After turning in my original photos, I was then told I needed to get more general shots of the rooms and equipment. So I did that. This first group of pictures was printed. Further down are more pictures that I took the first time around, but were not used as part of the photo essay.

Along with my picture was the article, Klotsche Center Pavilion opens its doors, by Kyle Sorvick.

KENILWORTH SQUARE

The first edition of The Leader for the new semester I had two photo assignments. One was of the new, under-construction Kenilworth Square apartmants. I was assigned to photograph the exterior of the building to accompany some interior shots already taken by someone else.

The second photo, below, was on the front cover of the Jan. 25, 2006 issue. The first picture, below, was part of a photo essay on page 8.

I have been taking ballroom dance lessons with my friend Martha at Fred Astaire dance studios. It has just been basic stuff, however it has been a lot of fun. The best dances are the Waltz (1-2-3) and the Push-Pull Hustle (rock step - march march).

CHRISTMAS WORKSHOP

It's a time filled with the Christmas spirit as children of all ages gathered at First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa for the annual Christmas Workshop on Dec. 4.

For the cost of only a few quarters children were able create Christmas crafts to give as gifts or keep as their own. A few of the items were reindeer ornaments, metallic mini Christmas trees, gingerbread men magnets, and handprint Christmas aprons.

Sharon Petrie helps Grace Anderson (6), Sydnney Islam (6), and Cedric Williams (8), make beaded votives during First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa's Christmas Workshop. Petrie has been volunteering at the event for 4 years now.

Hayden Doyle, (2), begins work on his gingerbread man magnet. The crafts at the Christmas Workshop were easy enough for children of all ages to make.

Julia Schmitt watches her son Tommy (3) as he makes a beaded cross bookmark. This is Tommy's second year at the Christmas Workshop.

ROSEBUD THEATER

A while ago I drove out to 6823 W. North Avenue to photograph the Rosebud Theater for The Leader.

R.E.P.S.
RESERVATIONS AND EVENT PLANNING SERVICES

My most recent work for The Leader was of the R.E.P.S. office at UWM. R.E.P.S. is in charge of booking and setting up events in union rooms.

This first picture ran in the Nov 9 issue as part of the article "Rooms for Rent" by Kristen Sweet. The second picture is just another good shot that resulted from the shoot.

BEHIND OR IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA?

Being photographed is completely different than photographing someone.

I am better at the second part, photographing someone. Being behind the camera is more natural for me. I like having control over the picture. I like placing the subject where I want it to be. I like representing the world like I see it with the help of my camera.

When I'm being photographed sometimes it feels forced. Like I have to act a special way. I wonder how I look. I wonder if I'm standing straight. I wonder how the photographer is framing me. I think of how I would like the shot to turn out. In the end, I have no control over that, because I'm only the subject.

I wonder what my subjects think about when I photograph them?

Gallery Night

My Friday Oct. 21 was a crazy busy day. I had my first broadcast club show, where I ran camera 2. Then I went right to a swim meet against Northwestern. We lost. Immediately after the meet, I went to the Third Ward, in downtown Milwaukee, to photograph Gallery Night for The Leader. These four photos were used as part of a photo essay in the Oct. 26 publishing.

Milwaukee Market

I got to take a trip to the new Milwaukee Market which opened Oct. 15. Inside I found an array of different foods, from produce, to fresh fish, to breads, to wholesale soybeans. It is a new and exciting addition to downtown Milwaukee.

I took these pictures on assignment for The Leader. They were published on Oct. 26 along side the article titled "New market appeals to Milwaukee's culinary hip," by Joseph Petrie.

An interpretation of a few ideas presented in Susan Sontag's essay "In Plato's Cave."

"A photograph passes for incontrovertible proof that a given thing happened" - Susan Sontag
Photography is a tool that is widely available to everyone. It is a tool that allows us to capture anything. The things we capture in pictures seem somehow more important to us than the things we don't capture. To us, the images we make become evidence to our lives, frozen in time for all to see.

A couple ways photography can be used as evidence:

Evidence of family memories
Evidence of travel

FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

Capturing and recording memories of families is one of the earliest uses of photography, according to Sontag. Photographs become proof of a family’s memories. Parents take pictures of their children. Couples take pictures of themselves to remember the moments they’ve spent together. A photograph becomes a tangible thing that people can hold on to, display, and pass around to one another.

Example:
Every holiday my family spends together, a camera is always present. Usually it’s my mom who is using it. She is constantly snapping photos us my sister and I opening presents at Christmas, or blowing out candles during birthdays. The pictures that are taken during these holidays become a way for us to look back upon these days as proof that they occurred.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND TOURISM

When people travel someplace out of their normal routine, especially for pleasure, it seems unnatural for them not to bring a camera along. “Photography will offer indisputable evidence that the trip was made, that the program was carried out, that the fun was had” (Sontag). Cameras are something you would almost expect to see with someone who is on a vacation.

Example:
A camera is something that I never travel without. I often have to bring a completely separate bag just for the camera and all the stuff that goes with it. On the trips I photograph everything. The people I’m with, the places I go, and the things I do. When I come home from these trips the pictures I shot are used as tools to show other people the things I’ve done. They become my evidence that I went outside my normal routine life.

A PICTURE VS. THE REALITY

Le Trahison des Images by Rene Magritte

The above painting by Rene Magritte represents the difference between an objest and the accual thing itself. The french writing in the painting roughly translates to "this is not a pipe." In fact it is not a pipe, but rather a painting of a pipe. You could not smole the above painting. You could only smoke the object that Magritte painted.

This is the same for photography. A picture of something is not the same as the accual thing. A picture of a person is not really that person. Instead, it is more a representation of that person frozen in a moment in time. A picture is a way of showing something, but it is not the actual thing.

For a week I carried my camera around to every class and photographed the people I sit next to. SZARKOWSKI'S 5
Journal #2

The Thing Itself
According to Szarkowski, photography deals with the actual. This being true he goes on to say that the photograph is a different thing than the reality. Szarkowski says that the photograph "was likely to claim that what our eyes saw was an illusion, and what the camera saw was the truth."

The Detail
"The photographer was tied to the facts of things," Szarkowski says. Detail is something that is recorded by photography. Pictures can record things with such detail that, according to Szarkowski, can make the trivial things be filled with undiscovered meaning.

The Frame
The idea of the frame being an element of photography is because the frame has the ability to "create a relationship between two figures that had not existed before," says Szarkowski. The frame in photography puts a border on reality. In a way it limits a photographers ability to accurately record reality because it limits the amount of information that can fit into a picture. The frame crops things out and creates new shapes at the boarders of a picture.

Time
Szarkowski says, "all photographs are time exposures, of a shorter or longer duration." No picture is static but rather a moment in time. It could be a couple of seconds, couple of fractions of a second, or a couple of minutes.

Vantage Point
Vantage point is the use of different angles of sight. Photography doesn't have to be just our normal 5 to 6 foot high straight on view but rather it could be an ants view or a birds eye view. Szarkowski says, "[photography] has taught us to see from the unexpected vantage point."

MILWAUKEE BREWERS

The very first thing I did for The Leader was a photo essay on the Milwaukee Brewers. The following pictures were taken on April 1-3, 2005. The first three were published on April 13, 2005. The last four I added for this post.

2005 was, number 7, J.J. Hardy's rookie season with the Brewers.

Chad Moeller caught in 65 games this year and had only 4 passed balls.

Because of injuries, Ben Sheets only started in 22 games this year.

In 2005 Jeff Cirillio batted .281. In 1999, the last year Cirillo played for the Brewers, he batted .326.

In Carlos Lee's first season with the Brewers he had 114 RBIs, putting him 6th overall in the National League.

2005 is Mark Attanasio's first year as owner of the Brewers. He has never owned a baseball team before, but used to be a New York Yankees fan.

Doug Melvin is the current Executive Vise President and General Mananger for the Brewers.

UWM THEATER

On Wednesday September 14 this photo was published by the Leader. It went along side an article entitled,
"From Renoir to Rodriguez: Union Theater Offers Another Semester of Diverse Cinema," by Matt Levine. The second photo was only posted with the online version.

The UWM film department was ranked in the top 7 graduate film programs by U.S. News and World Report.

Selected Tuesdays at the UWM Union Theater are Experimental Tuesdays. Showings on these nights are free to the public.

MY FAVORITE TIME OF LIGHTING

My favorite time of day is the morning. The fresh smell of dew on the grass to the long shadows of trees and buildings as the sun rises, everything seems to be starting up new. When I was in boy scouts and we would go camping, I always enjoyed waking up and being outside in the early morning hours.

However, my favorite time of day because of the light that is present is at night. This is somewhat crazy because there isn'Ât much light at night. Besides the soft moon glowing in the sky, all light is man made. Light comes from artificial sources, street lamps, carÃ‚Âs headlights, flashlights, and brightly lit store signs.

All this artificial lighting makes the night time lighting conditions so interesting. Every place you go, from the country side to the big city, has something different to see, if only because of the different night time lighting present.

NIGHT TIME IN WAUKESHA

In my years of photography, one time of day I've never studied was night. When assigned to capture light in my JMC 232 Photojournalism class, I thought it would be interesting to capture light during the night.

Translated from the Potawatomi's native language, the name Waukesha means "By the Little Fox."

Architect Albert Keymar designed and built the Pix Theater in 1939-40. Today it houses the Waukesha Civic Theater.

PIZZERIA UNO'S

I've gone to Pizzeria Uno's thousands of times. So far this year I've worked over 2,500 hours. All those times, I've never really taken time to study my surroundings. Because of this I've missed out.

In our everyday world, there are a lot of things that go overlooked. Those things may have been magnificent.

Cabernet is the most popular wine served at Pizzeria Uno’s.

The first public demonstration of Thomas Edison's light bulb was December 31, 1879. This light bulb is located on the exterior of Pizzeria Uno's.
